Ballito at a Glance

Ballito lies just 30 minutes north of Durban in the heart of the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa and is nestled between rippling fields of sugar cane, KwaZulu Natal's famous Green Gold. Ballito is flanked to the east by golden beaches and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean which makes this the ideal area to seek North Coast holiday accommodation.

The Dolphin Coast

The KwaZulu Natal Dolphin Coast home to the Bottlenose dolphin.
This is a stretch of tropical coastline, which borders the sugar cane lands north of Durban in KwaZulu Natal. The Dolphin Coast, as this area is otherwise named, gets its name from the many Bottlenose dolphins, which frequent this section of the warm Indian Ocean. They can be seen from our holiday apartments and guesthouses as they surf the waves most mornings in schools of anything up to 100 dolphins. Records kept by the Ballito Surf Life Guards since 1998 show that, for the period from January 2000 to date, barely a day has passed without schools of dolphins being seen in the surf off our beaches – and then only when the weather was dull – an infrequent occurrence. This is one of the very few places in the world where you have the opportunity to swim with these magnificent, friendly creatures – a very special experience for anyone visiting the Dolphin Coast.

Ballito and the Environment

Ballito a fine example of South Africa.
Ballito - This is a small, bustling, modern village situated amid rolling sugar cane-covered hills on the warm Indian Ocean coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, in the heart of the 'Dolphin Coast'. We enjoy a sub-tropical climate with average summer temperatures of 24°C - 28°C and winters, not much cooler, with temperatures averaging between 22°C and 24°C.

Sea and Sun

La Toinette 6 - The KwaZulu Natal North Coast Sea And Sun
Our golden beaches and sheltered coves are ideal and our beautiful swimming beaches are protected by shark nets and attended by professional Life Savers.

Surf the waves, from beginners to professionals, on surfboards and boogie-boards, or experience the freedom of body surfing.

If you don't surf yourself, watch the dolphins surfing in the waves from the quiet of the early morning to late afternoon, almost every day.

See the enormous, magnificent Southern Right Whales as they lazily blow and splash just offshore, on their way south during our summer months. This is the only country in the world that can claim to have the "Big Six" - the whale being the sixth after the four-legged Big Five.

Snorkel around the local coves and view all the ocean has to offer.

Scuba dive off the Sheffield Reef: Depth 9m, two parallel, with varied and plentiful fish and crustacean life; Tiffany's Reef: North of Salt Rock, 200m out, depth 8m, this flat reef with sand gullies is a popular spot for spear fishing, but is not recommended for diving from shore; Ballito's Big Bream Reef: 500m south of the Thompson's Bay tidal pool, small popular spearfishing spot 50m offshore, 7m deep; Ballito's Lemonfish Reef: Excellent crayfish spot (make sure you have your license), small, densely populated reef 150m out, depth 4m, access better by boat as beach access is through choppy rock channels.

Ocean kayaking will allow you an even closer view of the dolphins and hours of fun for all ages.

A round of golf can be played at the Umhlali Country Club, whose 18-hole golf course is rated one of KwaZulu Natal's best. A second, superb golf course has recently opened at the magnificent Zimbali Estate a stone's throw from Ballito. A little further up the coast, situated along the seafront and tucked away from the wind behind the natural sand dunes is the Prince's Grant Golf Course.

Tennis and squash can be played at the Umhlali Country Club, where a warm welcome is extended to visitors.

Guided out-rides on horseback through lush cane lands, from the stables to the beach and back again, can be a unique way to experience the natural beauty of the Dolphin Coast.

Feel the breeze on your face and smell the Indian Ocean as you enjoy an exhilarating horse ride through the beautiful indigenous forests of the Zimbali Estate and bordering unspoiled beaches. Share the trails with blue duiker, bushbuck, guinea fowl and other wildlife. Novices and experienced riders are catered for and accompanied by an experienced guide.
